A private investigator hired by Trudell to find the cause of the blaze has refused to hand over a copy of his investigation report to Trudell, even though the investigator has been paid.
“He doesn’t know what we know about the blaze.”
“He’s trying to cover up the fact that a group of people set the blaze, and nothing else caused it.”
“What happened to my family made me realize I am an extension of my people’s past. It was Wounded Knee and diseased blankets all over again.”
“I couldn’t change the reality of their deaths. I had to accept that, but with that acceptance came the will to continue the resistance struggle of Indian people that has gone on for the past 500 years.”
“Too often, organizations create unnecessary titles. I felt I could get more work done if I could stop confusing myself with that title.”
“We’re still as active as ever, but the media is censoring it. We just don’t receive media attention.”
“We didn’t receive any media coverage at all. The activism still exists but the outside world is just dealing with it differently.”
“It’s surprising how uptight people get when they see someone without shoes. I went back to my childhood memories and started going barefoot after my family died. I think it was a reaction to their deaths, an attempt to find some type of comfort.”~
